A Spirit of Nature’s Invention
This is the first chapter of an expanded graphic novel based around the characters from my short story ‘the Greatest and Greenest Romantic’. Whilst sharing the same central idea of a disillusioned troll poet, this story delves into the origins of the creature in parallel narratives that take place in the mid 19th century and the present day.
A darker take on the relationship between humans and the natural world, this interpretation is inspired by the gothic fiction of Mary Shelly and Bram Stoker. The story is woven out of fragments of source material, with extracts from journals, letters and poems running concurrently alongside the sequential art that forms the present flow of time.
I have created a broad cast of characters, and written an entire narrative arc for a potential book. I hope to develop it further in 2019, perhaps serialising it chapter by chapter.
